2024 Blackbutt Show

The 90th annual Blackbutt Show will be held at the Blackbutt Showgrounds in Hart Street, Blackbutt from 5:30am this morning (when the gates open) until 11:30pm tonight. This year's Show will feature a full range of horse events (anything from led breed and ridden breed through to hacks and rider classes). There'll also be a big roll-up of cattle and poultry along with the popular woodchop and chainsawing competitions; lots of ring events; a Dog Show; pony rides; and plenty of fun for children including face painting, a baby animal farm, and Dinkum Dinosaurs. As usual the Show will also feature a great spread of pavilion exhibits; sideshow alley; showbags; and trade displays. And after dark there'll also be a fireworks display at 7:30pm, followed by live entertainment until 11:00pm. Admission this year to $15.00 for adults or $5.00 for high school students and pensioners (children under 12 are admitted free). More details? Chess - The Musical
The South Burnett Musical Comedy Society will be presenting their second performance of "Chess - The Musical" at Kingaroy Town Hall in Glendon Street, Kingaroy from 7:00pm until 10:00pm tonight. Chess traces the story of a politically driven, Cold War-era chess tournament between two grand masters - one American and the other Soviet - and their fight over a woman who manages one and falls in love with the other. The lead role in this stunning 29-person production will be played by Julee-anne Bell (who wowed Australia on The Voice in 2022), all set against a musical score written by ABBA's Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus with lyrics by Tim Rice. Tickets to Chess are $30 for adults or $20 for students/concessions and they can be booked online or purchased at the door. Note: There'll be four additional performances this Sunday and next Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Kingaroy Friendship Markets
The third Saturday of the month Friendship Markets will be held at Kingaroy Showgrounds in Youngman Street, Kingaroy from 7:00am to around 12:00pm today. The markets are run by the Kingaroy Show Society and feature a range of arts, crafts, food stalls, fruit and garden stalls, plus unusual bric-a-brac. New stallholders are always very welcome.
Ground Crew - Kingaroy
Ground Crew will be performing at the Commercial Hotel at the corner of Glendon and Haly Streets, Kingaroy from 8:00pm to 11:00pm tonight. Admission is free and the hotel's kitchen will be open for dinner and snacks. More details? Phone (07) 4162-1380.
Proston Community Markets
The monthly Proston Community Markets - organised by the Proston Show Society and held on the 3rd Saturday of each month - will be running outside the QCWA Rooms at Railway Park in Rodney Street, Proston from 8:00am to around noon this morning. Stalls feature everything from craftwork to baked goods and bric-a-brac are are always fun to browse. There'll also be a great BBQ breakfast and Devonshire morning teas available, as well as a large fruit and veggie tray raffle. Nanango Men's Shed
The Nanango Men's Shed at the corner of Mt Stanley Road and Heathermore Lane, Nanango will be open from 8:30am to around 12:30pm today for its regular Saturday get-together. Moore Hall Markets
The monthly Moore Markets will be held outside the Moore Soldiers Memorial Hall off the D'Aguilar Highway in Moore from 7:00am to around 12:00 noon today. The markets are held on the 3rd Saturday of every month and feature hand painted china; hand made jewellery; hand crafted dolls; quilts; biscuit tin banjos; jade; wooden toys; delightful handmade bags; plants; bric-a-brac; antiques and collectables; tea cosies; baby clothes; tea towels; candles; soaps; cakes; jams and pickles, and more. There's also great brekkies available inside the Hall, and with Christmas drawing ever closer Santa will be paying a visit today as well. Everyone is welcome!
Wooroolin Line Dancers
The Wooroolin Line Dancers will be holding a line dancing class for beginners and intermediate line dancers at Wooroolin Hall on the Bunya Highway at Wooroolin from 9:00am to 10:00am this morning (for beginners) and 10:00am to 12:30pm (for intermediates). Course fees are $5 each for the beginners and intermediate classes, or you can do both for $10. Everyone is welcome.
Brian Avery - Linville
Solo entertainer Brian Avery will be performing at the Linville Hotel in George Street, Linville from 4:00pm until late tonight. The hotel's kitchen will also be operating from 11:00am for lunch, dinner and snacks and there's free camping across the road or paid accommodation at the pub if you want to stay overnight. Yarraman Men's Shed

Brisbane Valley Rail Trail Parkrun - Blackbutt
The Blackbutt parkrun group will be holding its weekly 5km timed walk/run along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail at Blackbutt from 7:00am this morning. The starting line is adjacent to the Roy Emerson Museum, off Bowman Road. Runners follow a course along the former railway line and the parkrun group is free to join. All you need to do is register (once) online (it's officially called the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail parkrun) and bring the printed barcode to any parkrun event.
Yarraman Markets
The Yarraman Progress Association's Yarraman Markets will be held on the vacant block at the corner of the D'Aguilar and New England Highways (ie opposite Bendigo Bank) in Yarraman from 7:00am until around 12:00 noon today. The markets are held on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Saturday each month and they feature trash and treasure stalls, car boot sellers, local produce and hand-made goods, as well as food stalls. Byte Nite - Murgon
The South Burnett PCYC at 40 Macalister Street, Murgon will be holding a free Byte Night of fun and games for 12 to 18-year-olds between 6:00pm and 9:00pm this evening. Mountain Bike Trails Opening - Gordonbrook Dam
The South Burnett Mountain Bike Club will be holding the official grand opening of their new mountain bike tracks at Gordonbrook Dam from 9:00am to 11:30pm today. The club have spent the past two years building the new tracks and activities will kick off at 9:00am with the official opening of the new trails complex, followed by a trail walk at 9:30am, and then trail riding and a mountain bike skills clinic that will run through until noon. This will be followed by a BBQ lunch and then Short Course XC Racing between 2:00pm and 4:00pm. Everyone is welcome and mountain bikers are encouraged to bring their bikes to try out the trails themselves. Tomorrow, the club will host Round 1 of the Wild West Series for registered participants between 9:00am and 12:00 noon, followed by a BBQ lunch, and spectators are very welcome to come view all the action.
Reconstructing Reality - Nanango
Former Australian film, television and theatre actor Damien Richardson will be talking about "Media Manipulation In The Modern Era" at the Nanango Cultural Centre in George Street, Nanango from 1:30pm today, with his talk kicking off at 2:00pm followed by a Q&A session. Damien says his talk "untangles the web of deceit used to paint any resistance to the corporate narrative" and he claims to offer "a fresh perspective on how ordinary Australians might hope to stand up to a government-approved tyranny in the future". Tickets are $20 per head and they can be booked online
Murgon Men's Shed
The Murgon Men's Shed will be holding a meeting at their shed in Macalister Street, Murgon (the shed next to the former Murgon Railway Station) today. The Men's Shed meets every Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday to work on projects and new members are always welcome.
Harrington Circus Show - Wondai
The Harrington Circus Show will be continuing its three-day run at the Wondai Sportsgrounds off the Bunya Highway north of Wondai's CBD today, offering an all-new 50-minute performance under a heated Big Top at 3:00pm and again at 7:00pm. This will be followed by a final performance at 12:00 noon tomorrow. Tickets range from $22 to $27 for adults and $12 to $17 for children, depending on seating (front or sides). More details? An Evening With Salliana Campbell - Nanango
Multi-instrumental artist Salliana Seven Campbell will be performing at 103 Rural Road, Nanango from 7:00pm to 8:00pm this evening. Salliana won the Best Feature Film Score at the 2022 APRA Awards for the film The Drover's Wife - The Legend of Molly Johnson (starring and written by the South Burnett's very own Leah Purcell) and she'll be playing a variety of rarely-seen instruments. Festival Of The Dams - Boondooma
Round 1 of the 2024 Festival Of The Dams fishing competition will be held at Lake Boondooma today and tomorrow. The competition offers great prizes for competitive fishers (rergistrations closed last week) but few amusements for spectators except at the prize-giving tomorrow, when the winners (who are usually wearing board shorts) are asked how they did it and usually reply "Mate, I used a spinner bait". The next round will be held later this year at BP Dam.
