June 22, 2026 - South Burnett Regional Council is pleased to announce a new partnership with Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council and the Queensland Government to launch the Local Government Battery Collection Program.

This initiative will provide residents with an easy way to dispose of used batteries safely.

The Local Government Battery Collection Program is designed to address the growing concern over battery waste which poses significant environmental risks if not disposed of properly.

By offering this dedicated collection service, Council aims to encourage residents to recycle their batteries easily and safely.

Items accepted:

• Vapes and e-cigarettes
• Electric toothbrushes and shavers
• Flashing or light-up toys
• Bluetooth speakers and headphones
• Smart watches and wearable devices
• Power tools
• Small solar lights
• All alkaline batteries
• All button cell batteries
• Mobile phones

Items NOT accepted:

• Commercial/bulk quantities of e-scooters
• EV batteries
• Mobility scooters

The initial roll out of specially designed collection containers will be available at the below designated drop off locations throughout the region, making it convenient for residents to recycle their used batteries:

June 22, 2026 - South Burnett Regional Council is pleased to announce the upgraded access to the Cloyna Transfer Station will be implemented on Monday, July 13, 2026.

The facility will include an access control system to limit access to those who live within approved localities ensuring a safer, cleaner and more efficient facility for residents.

The new access control system will require all users to scan the access fob to enter and exit the facility.

The localities authorised to utilise the new facility are:

- Cobbs Hill
- Glenrock
- Kitoba
- Sunny Nook
- Windera
- Wooroonden
- Tablelands
- Crownthorpe

In preparation for the implementation of the access gate, members of the public that live within the approved areas are encouraged to apply for an access fob.

June 22, 2026 - South Burnett Regional Council advises of an early closure for Customer Service Centres and Libraries on Tuesday, June 30, 2026 for the end of financial year reconciliation.

To allow time for completion of these processes, Council offices will close all receipting at 3:00pm, with offices and libraries closing at 4:00pm.

June 19, 2026 - South Burnett Regional Council advises that car parking works will be undertaken on Burnett Street, adjacent to Alan Downie Sports Fields.

The existing grassed and gravel area will be sealed to accommodate 74 carparks, including two disability carparks.

Works are scheduled to commence during the week of Monday, June 22, 2026.

The anticipated duration of the project is approximately one (1) month, subject to weather conditions and construction progress.

To facilitate works, temporary traffic control measures will be in place, including lane closures and traffic control.

Temporary delays to traffic of up to 10 minutes are expected during construction. Access for residents and property owners will be maintained where possible and managed by site staff.

Construction activity will generate noise from machinery and equipment, and there may be temporary restrictions to roadside access within the work area.

June 12, 2026 - The South Burnett Regional Council boundary is located 60km from the rabbit-proof fence, however the region is experiencing an increase in rabbit populations.

Landholders are encouraged to monitor for rabbit activity, destroy warrens and known harbouring locations, such as removing piles of old logs or bricks, removing dense weed infestation, clearing under old buildings and participating in co-ordinated pest animal control programs.

Council is calling on local landholders to take part in its upcoming winter Pindone rabbit baiting program, aimed at reducing the impact of invasive rabbits across the region.

Rabbits are a serious pest, causing significant damage to pastures, lawns, playing fields, crops and native vegetation.

By working together, landholders can achieve more effective control and help protect the region’s agricultural productivity and biodiversity.

June 12, 2026 - South Burnett Regional Council has strengthened its feral pig management program with the purchase of two new PIGBAITTA feeders.

These feeders will be used to pre-feed and bait feral pigs, complementing Council’s existing resources of five pig traps — two large and three small — which are available for hire by local landholders.

The new equipment builds on the success of Council’s recent co-ordinated 1080 baiting program, which saw a 25 per cent increase in participation from landholders and a substantial rise in pig-baiting activity across the region.

This investment reflects Council’s commitment to supporting landholders in tackling the environmental and agricultural damage caused by feral pigs.

Feral pigs are a serious threat to our farming community, native wildlife and waterways. By expanding our control measures, we’re giving landholders more tools to protect their properties and the environment.

Council encourages landholders to take advantage of the traps and feeders, and to participate in the next co-ordinated baiting program in October.

May 15, 2026 - South Burnett Regional Council is pleased to announce Railway Park in Proston has now reopened.

The decision to temporarily close the park was made after broken glass was discovered in the playground's softfall, posing a safety risk to visitors.

To ensure the safety of all park-goers, the contaminated softfall was entirely removed and has been replaced with new softfall chips ensuring that the playground is safe for children and families.

May 1, 2026 - South Burnett Regional Council advises that a new piece of play equipment will be installed at Apex Park in Kingaroy.

Earthworks and construction of a retaining wall have commenced, and the new item will be installed late May.

The playground will remain open to the public during this time.

This project will be funded by the Queensland Government as part of the Works For Queensland funding program.

May 1, 2026 - South Burnett Regional Council advises that the existing 80km/h section of Maguire Road and Brocklehurst Road, Wattle Camp, has been reduced to 60km/h.

After a technical review, a decision was made at the January 2026 Traffic Advisory Committee meeting to provide consistent speed signage throughout the local area.

Cr Jane Erkens said that as the divisional Councillor she supported this change as it responded to local residents' concerns and helped ensure speed limits reflected the road conditions and the safety of all users.
